The Freeride World Tour (FWT) has announced that Andorra will host the first FIS Freeride World Championships, which will take place from February 1 to 6, 2026, at the Ordino Arcalís resort. This event will mark a historic moment for this sport as it will be the first time that freeride will hold a World Championship under the umbrella of the International Ski Federation (FIS).
For more than ten years, Andorra has been a reference destination for freeride and hosting the World Championships will further solidify its position as a global epicentre of this discipline. The event will not only bring together the world's best freeriders but will also elevate the sport to new heights, providing an unprecedented platform for freeride skiing and snowboarding.
Grandvalira Resorts' marketing director, David Ledesma, explained that “after more than 10 years of permanent presence in the FWT circuit, we felt that our commitment to freeride should reach new goals, and we worked with FIS Freeride to become the first organizers in the history of the World Championships in our sport. For Andorra and Ordino Arcalís, which have already become a world reference in freeride, it is important to create a legacy that helps freeride grow.”
For his part, Freeride World Tour founder and CEO Nicolas Hale-Woods emphasized the Principality's excellence as a host, highlighting the destination's quality: “Andorra has proven to be a premium freeride destination for more than a decade, with world-class settings and exceptional hospitality. FIS Freeride is very excited to make history with our Andorran partners. The FIS Freeride World Championships are an important step in bringing freeride skiing and snowboarding to audiences around the world.”
The qualification system for these first FIS Freeride World Championships will be announced in December 2024, after final approval by the FIS Council on October 23.
